We are often asked the question ‘Do you Bulk Bill?’ When a psychologist offers a Bulk-Billing service they reduce their payment to the rebate provided by Medicare for the service. With the recommended rate for psychology at $254 a session, the bulk billing rebate does not cover the full recommended fee. bUlk billing only pays $86.15 for Psychologists and $126.50 for Clinical Psychologists.
Many people do not realise what it actually means to Bulk Bill. Often people assume that the government pays the health professional their full fee. This is simply not the case. By agreeing to Bulk Bill a service the health professional is in fact agreeing to offer a heavily discounted service to the client/patient.
Unfortunately, the cost of running a private practice does not allow us to operate a bulk billing service whist also providing the gold standard treatment and customer service to our clients. Whilst it may still seem like a lot of money to receive $86/$126 for a service, do not forget that this amount must pay the wage of the psychologist, their support staff, as well as rent and resources they go along with running a quality serivce.
If you feel the government should offer more in the way of rebates we strongly encourage you to get in touch with your local Federal member of Parliament to express your concerns.
Whilst we are unable to Bulk Bill our services we do have a range of no gap services that you may be eligible for. These include:
- Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA)
- WorkCover and Private Insurance (e.g. Guild, Allianz, Suncorp, etc)
- National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
- Employee Assistance Programs
In limited circumstances we are able to offer some reduced fee appointments with a $40 gap after the Medicare rebate has been received. These are offered to people with a healthcare card. There may be a wait for these services.
Please see our list of low fee and free services that may be able to assist you should you require it.
