How Sensory Needs Shape Children’s Behaviour: A Parent’s Guide to the Brain-Body Connection Image

As parents, we often notice behaviour first.

A child may be constantly moving, crashing into furniture, refusing to wear certain clothes, covering their ears, chewing on their sleeves, struggling to sit at the dinner table, or collapsing into an explosive meltdown after a busy day at school. It is easy to interpret these moments as “not listening,” “being difficult,” “seeking attention,” or “refusing to cooperate.”

Sometimes, however, behaviour is telling us something critical about what is happening inside a child’s body. What Is Sensory Integration?

Every moment of the day, our brain receives a constant stream of information from our body and the surrounding environment. While we are familiar with vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, other internal systems are equally vital:

  • The Vestibular System: Provides information about movement, balance, and where our head is in space.
  • The Proprioceptive System: Receives feedback from muscles and joints, telling us where our body parts are and how much physical force we are using.
  • Internal Sensations (Interoception): Signals internal bodily states such as hunger, thirst, fatigue, or a full bladder.

Looking Underneath the Behaviour:

Pediatric psychologist Dr. Mona Delahooke urges adults to view challenging behavior in the context of a child’s physiological state rather than assuming every action is intentional. A behaviour is often a child’s attempt to cope with overwhelming sensory, emotional, or physiological demands:

 

  • Movement in Class: A child pacing or squirming may need movement input to stay awake and regulated—not simply needing to “try harder to sit.”
  • Shopping Centre Refusal: A child refusing to walk into a store may be overwhelmed by fluorescent lights, noise, and crowds—rather than being deliberately oppositional.
  • Pushing in Line: A child pushing others may struggle to judge personal space or physical force—though they still need support to keep peers safe.
  • After-School Meltdowns: A child collapsing at home has often spent hours masking and managing a demanding sensory environment until reaching their absolute capacity.

 

Looking beneath behaviour does not mean removing boundaries. It means understanding why something is happening so we can select an effective response.

Regulation Comes Before Higher-Level Skills

When a child’s nervous system is dysregulated or overloaded, the prefrontal cortex—the region of the brain responsible for listening, logic, communication, and frustration tolerance, goes offline.

Repeating phrases like “Use your words,” “Calm down,” or “Listen to me” will not work when a child is in a state of sensory stress. Supporting regulation must come first:

  • Reduce Sensory Load: Dim lighting, quiet the room, or step outside.
  • Minimize Verbal Demands: Speak in fewer, calmer words.
  • Offer Grounding Input: Allow safe movement or offer firm, supportive physical presence.
  • Co-Regulate: Remain emotionally available while the child’s nervous system settles.

Becoming a “Sensory Detective”

Supporting sensory needs isn’t about buying specialized gear or giving every child a fidget toy. Sensory strategies must be individualized. Start by observing your child and asking:

 

  • Context: What happened right before the behaviour escalated? Was the environment noisy, crowded, or unpredictable?
  • Sensory Triggers: Which textures, sounds, clothes, or visual settings consistently cause distress?
  • Sensory Seeking: What inputs does my child actively seek out (jumping, squeezing, chewing, spinning)?
  • State of Being: Are things harder when they are tired, hungry, or unwell?
  • Organizing Inputs: What actually helps their body settle (firm pressure, quiet spaces, going outside, sitting somewhere snug)?

Shift your internal question from “Why are you behaving like this?” to “What is making this hard for you right now?”

When to Consult an Occupational Therapist

Sensory differences are a normal part of human variation. Enjoying movement or disliking loud sounds does not mean a child requires therapy.

An Occupational Therapy assessment is recommended when sensory and motor differences consistently interfere with a child’s ability to participate in essential daily activities—such as dressing, eating, sleeping, playing, learning, or attending school.
