School is where children develop far more than academic knowledge. For example, independently organising materials, remembering multi-step instructions or transitioning between activities may require significantly more mental effort than adults realise.
Evidence suggests that reducing unnecessary cognitive load allows students to direct more mental energy towards learning. Practical strategies such as visual schedules, breaking tasks into smaller steps, providing written instructions alongside verbal information and allowing additional processing time are supported by educational research and benefit many learners, not only those who are neurodiverse.
Rather than fostering dependence, these supports help students develop independence by making expectations more accessible.
Psychological safety supports learning
Neuroscience and psychological research have consistently demonstrated that learning is closely linked with emotional wellbeing. When children experience high levels of stress or uncertainty, the brain prioritises responding to perceived threats over higher-order cognitive processes such as reasoning, memory and problem solving.
Creating psychologically safe learning environments allows children to engage more fully with learning.
Psychological safety is supported when children experience predictable routines, respectful relationships, clear expectations and opportunities to recover from periods of heightened stress or sensory overload.
This does not mean removing all challenges. Rather, it involves creating environments where children feel safe enough to take risks, make mistakes and ask for help.
Importantly, psychological safety benefits every learner and contributes to positive classroom culture.
Strengths-based support promotes participation
Contemporary psychological research increasingly emphasises the importance of strengths-based practice.
Rather than focusing solely on areas of difficulty, strengths-based approaches recognise children’s interests, abilities and preferred ways of learning as important foundations for engagement and motivation.
Many neurodiverse learners demonstrate creativity, innovative thinking, persistence, attention to detail or deep knowledge within areas of personal interest. Building on these strengths supports confidence while also creating opportunities for meaningful participation within the classroom.
Evidence also suggests that students who experience belonging and acceptance are more likely to engage in learning, develop positive peer relationships and experience improved emotional wellbeing.
Inclusion is therefore about much more than physical placement within a classroom. It is about ensuring every student has opportunities to participate, contribute and experience success in ways that recognise their individuality.
Collaboration creates better outcomes
Research consistently highlights that collaborative partnerships between families, educators and clinicians contribute to more consistent and effective support.
Parents offer valuable knowledge about their child’s strengths, interests and experiences across different environments. Teachers understand classroom participation and learning demands, while clinicians contribute evidence informed assessment and intervention strategies that consider cognitive, emotional and behavioural development.
When these perspectives are brought together, support becomes more individualised and responsive to the child’s needs.
Collaboration also promotes consistency across home and school, reducing confusion for children and strengthening the implementation of supportive strategies.

Supporting neurodiverse learners begins with understanding, but meaningful inclusion requires action.
Psychological science tells us that children learn best when environments reduce unnecessary barriers, recognise individual strengths and provide appropriate supports that promote autonomy and participation.
