Sleep is your Superpower

It’s exam season. Stress levels are up, to-do lists are long and sleep is usually the first thing to go. You might think that sacrificing rest for a few extra hours of revision is worth it, but is that really the best decision for you? Science says otherwise. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or on edge right now, the best performance hack isn’t more coffee or late-night cramming. It’s sleep.

Exam Stress Feeds Off Sleep Deprivation

When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, the stress hormone. That’s natural in small doses, but high cortisol for days on end (like during the exam period) makes you feel edgy, irritable and mentally exhausted.
Now add poor sleep to that mix:
● Your brain has no time to process the day’s
stress
● Your emotional regulation goes offline
● You’re more reactive, less focused and more
anxious
Lack of sleep makes stress worse — and more stress makes it harder to sleep. It’s a cycle worth breaking.

You need sleep to manage stress and stay calm

During sleep, especially deep and REM sleep:
● Your amygdala (the part of your brain that fires during anxiety) resets
● Your hippocampus stores memories and study info for
long-term use
● Your prefrontal cortex, the decision-making, logical part
of your brain, gets back online
Translation? With sleep – you will feel calmer, remember more and think more clearly. That’s a big win!

Sleep and Stress During Exams

With Sleep
● Improved memory
● Less stress
● Clearer focus (even under pressure)
● Better emotional regulation
● Boosted immune system

Without Sleep
● Forgetting what you revised
● Heightened stress and anxiety
● Brain fog, reduced problem solving ability
● Snappy and on-edge feeling
● Headaches and low energy

Create a realistic wind-down routine for before bed

You don’t need to be perfect – just try to be consistent.
● Cue your brain to slow down
● Put away your books
● Jot down your top 3 priorities for the next day
● Pack your bag for the next day
● Turn off your screens
● Put your phone on night mode or out of reach
● Create a calm-down vibe
● Turn off the lights
● Consider a calming playlist, short guided meditation or white noise
Your brain can’t store knowledge without sleep. If you’re sleep-deprived, all that effort studying could go to waste.

Study smart to reduce stress.

Exam stress is real, but don’t let it push sleep to the bottom of your priorities. When you choose sleep, you’re choosing:
● A calmer nervous system
● A sharper memory
● A more focused, less reactive you
So the next time stress tells you to stay up all night… close the books, plug in your sleep playlist and say: “I’m studying with my eyes closed.”
