When Goals Lead to the Discovery of Deeper Values

When Goals Lead to the Discovery of Deeper Values

Sometimes, pursuing goals can lead to unexpected self-discoveries. While we often set goals with the best of intentions, and align them with our values, the journey can then uncover priorities and beliefs we weren’t fully aware of and/or that our values are not what we thought they were. If we are self-aware and honest with ourselves, the journey will lead to moments of discovery that will deepen our understanding of ourselves and refine what truly matters in our lives. Our goals will have become tools to discover our deeper values.

Uncovering values through goal setting

  1. The journey reveals what matters
As we work toward a goal, the process can highlight the values that resonate most deeply. For instance, striving for career success might bring a sense of accomplishment but also reveal the importance of connection, balance, or time spent with loved ones.

  2. Reflection on the experience
While goals provide us with direction and structure, it is the journey itself that holds much of the wisdom. Goals provide a structure for action, but the experiences we gain along the way will reveal more about who we are. It’s good to take time to pause and reflect e.g., “Does this really feel like who I am?” and being honest and vulnerable enough to recognise when something doesn’t fit. When we do this, we discover more about ourselves.

  3. Adapting goals to fit new insights
Discovering values through goal setting doesn’t mean abandoning the original goal. Instead, it allows for a reframing or adjustment that integrates these newfound priorities. For example, a fitness goal might shift from a focus on appearance to one that prioritises well-being and self-care.

  4. Learning through trial and error
Sometimes, pursuing a goal reveals that it’s misaligned with what we value most. These experiences are not failures—they’re stepping stones that clarify our true priorities. For instance, someone might pursue a goal of financial success only to discover that simplicity or community is more fulfilling.

Growth Through Discovery

Sometimes, it’s through trial and error that we learn whether a goal is truly aligned with our values. It is important not to think of an outcome as a failure – think of the goal as a poor fit so that it becomes an opportunity for growth. The pursuit of goals is not just about achievement but also about self-discovery. By staying open to what the journey reveals, we learn more about ourselves (i.e. our values) and become more authentic beings. This way, goals become more than milestones: they evolve into tools for understanding ourselves and knowing ourselves (and our values) better.
