13 Jan What Are Values, and Why Are They Important
Values are the guiding principles that shape our lives. They’re not goals or achievements but ongoing directions—like a compass pointing us toward the person we want to be. For instance, kindness might be a value, while helping a neighbour in need is an action aligned with it. Values help us navigate life’s challenges and give our actions a sense of meaning and coherence.
Recognising Your Values
To incorporate values into your life, you first need to identify them. Start by asking yourself questions like:
- What kind of person do I want to be?
- What do I stand for?
- When have I felt most fulfilled?
For example, if you feel deeply satisfied after spending quality time with loved ones, your value might be connection or family. Writing down your values or reflecting on moments of pride or joy can help you clarify them.
What Happens Without Values?
When we’re disconnected from our values, we may feel adrift, much like experiencing Frankl’s concept of the “existential vacuum.” This void can lead to feelings of boredom, apathy, or even despair. Without a clear sense of purpose, we may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as overworking, excessive screen time, or substance use, to fill the emptiness. For example, someone who values creativity but doesn’t nurture it might feel frustrated or unfulfilled, compensating with distractions that provide only temporary relief.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters to us. Many of us drift through life feeling disconnected or unfulfilled, often without understanding why.
Living a Values-Driven Life
Incorporating your values into daily life requires ongoing reflection and adjustment. Periodically revisit your values and ask, “Am I living in alignment with what truly matters to me?” Celebrate your progress and learn from setbacks without judgment.
By living a values-driven life, you’ll find greater resilience, satisfaction, and connection. As Frankl observed, “Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear almost any ‘how.’” Embrace your values, and let them guide you toward a life of meaning and fulfillment.
