Understanding and Celebrating Gender Identity

Understanding Gender Identity

Gender is a social construct, meaning our ideas about gender are shaped by culture, history, and society. Because of this, there are many valid ways to experience and express gender. Gender diverse people may identify as transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, agender, and others. Every identity is real and deserves respect.

Gender identity is a person’s internal sense of who they are—whether that’s male, female, both, neither. This is different from sexual identity (who you’re attracted to) and physical characteristics (your biological or assigned sex at birth).

The Mental Health Impact of Gender Discrimination

Sadly, gender discrimination is still a significant issue in Australia and around the world. This discrimination can be overt like direct bullying or harassment—or more subtle, such as individuals being misgendered, or denied opportunities. These forms of discrimination result in minority stress—which is the ongoing stress faced by people who are part of a marginalized group, when faced with repeated experiences of rejection, harassment, or a lack of acceptance.

Australian Data on Gender Diverse Mental Health

In Australia, the statistics are sobering. Studies show that trans and gender diverse Australians are nearly eleven times more likely to try to end their life via suicide than the cisgender population. Many also report high rates of anxiety, depression, and experiences of discrimination, both in public and when accessing healthcare.

How We Can Improve Outcomes: Being an Ally

  • Educate Yourself and Others: Take time to learn about gender diversity. Challenge stereotypes and misinformation when you encounter them.
  • Speak Up: If you see discrimination or exclusion, use your voice to stand up for respect and inclusion.
  • Create Safe Spaces: Whether at work, school, or in your community, help build environments where everyone feels safe and accepted for who they are.
  • Support Affirming Care: Advocate for accessible, affirming, and respectful healthcare and mental health support for gender diverse people.

Celebrating Pride Month

Pride Month is a celebration of the diversity, resilience, and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s also a reminder that the fight for equality and acceptance continues. Let’s use this time to reflect on how we can be better allies, create safe spaces, and celebrate all gender identities within our community.

Happy Pride Month!
