18 Aug Ms Jessica Burns
My name is Jess and I became a psychologist because I love supporting people to work towards a life in which they feel fulfilled, are able to overcome challenges, and can connect with their values and what is important to them. I feel that the challenges people face in their lives do not define them, and endeavour to maintain an open, warm, and non-judgemental environment for the people I work with.
I enjoy working with clients across the lifespan, who may be experiencing a range of different challenges. I really enjoy variety in my work and am very open to seeing any clients within my experience level.
My previous experience has largely focused on working with young people and their families, but I also love working with adults. I am particularly passionate about supporting recovery from OCD, improving self-esteem, coping with intense emotions, and helping people regain a sense of safety and stability following traumatic experiences.
I like to work collaboratively with clients to create treatment plans that are individualised and based on their specific goals. I draw from cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, and motivational interviewing. I place a big emphasis on supporting self-exploration, self-compassion, improving functioning, and in building resilience and coping skills. I believe feedback is a gift, and check in regularly to see what is working, and how I can improve sessions to make them as valuable as possible.
I feel connecting with personal interests and meaningful activities is such an important aspect of self-care, and helps me ensure my cup is always full. In my free time I enjoy hiking, gardening, and being outside in nature. Eating is also one of my favourite hobbies and I love to try different types of food from around the world. I also prioritise spending quality time with the important people in my life and feel this sense of human connection is vital for maintaining wellbeing. I am always curious to learn about what activities and relationships are important to the clients I work with, and encourage deepening these connections as much as possible.
